Hey, I have a questions about capabilities and the event. I'm new to motorsports and drifting so I would be learning at this event.
I have a S14 with a stock ka24de with 181k miles probably pushing 110 - 120 HP and an auto tranny. I would love to participate in the event, but I do not want burn up track time if my car isn't up to the task. I'm ok with using 1st and 2nd around the track and I can get my backend to kick out normally.
Has anyone else drifted with an auto transmission at these events? I wouldn't want to take one of the 35 slots and end up bumping someone.
Thanks for any advice. I anticipate a cool custom cfinch flamejob on this post.

Hey Tommy, how strict are they on base about shooting footage? Not just footage in general, but where I would be allowed to shoot from. Let me know if I need to sign some waiver saying if I get plowed down by a rouge car, that it's my own fault. lol
I guess I'll be alright shooting from where the photo guys were last time, but its always awesome to be in exciting places.

Like Fever said earlier, there will be a skid pad, or an area where you can practice donuts (an essential stage of learning) and you will not interfere with anyone. Everyone is out there to have fun and learn and with out new people becoming interested in the sport, drifting will not enjoy much of a future. After you feel comfortable on the skid pad, hit the track for a few runs, you won't be taking up anyone's track time. Last years event was well organized and everyone got more than enough run time. Most will run out of tires before they run out of driving time.

Please read the following closely if you are going attending the event on Sept 27th.
The safety guidelines for our events are pretty standard. If you have attended any events before you already know what to expect. As always the tech inspection is available for download here:
http://www.usdrift.com/UserFiles/File/USD%20Tech%20Form.pdf
The event is considered a self tech event. Meaning that you are responsible for the safety of your own car. You can print the form and check your car before
the event. Just make sure you bring the completed form on the day of. Your car will be checked at the track before it is allowed to run, but you must go over your own car and make sure you do not endanger yourself or anyone else with an unsafe vehicle.
Some basic questions that have been asked over the years...
What helmet do I need? You need a minimum of a snell 95 or newer rated helmet. M95/SA95 are ok.
Are convertibles allowed to run? Yes, but only with rollover protection. Meaning a roll bar.
Broken Windshield? =No run.
What do I need to wear? 4.11 Minimum Attire:
Any participant in the staging lane must wear at least a T-shirt, pants, and shoes (no open toed shoes). Some racetracks may have more restrictive requirements. By pants they mean LONG PANTS. Straight from the rule book.
Battery.....why can't people mount their batteries......... 3.2.8 Battery:
The battery shall be securely fastened to the car. No Bungee cords or rubber cords may be used to function as the sole hold down mechanism. An electrically non-conductive material must cover the positive battery terminal. Any battery located inside the driver’s compartment (including hatchback style cars) should be fully covered and firmly secured to the chassis (or tub) in a marine type battery case. True dry cell batteries may be mounted without a surrounding case, however a case is still recommended.
Anyway, the entire rule book is available for download here. http://www.usdrift.com/UserFiles/File/USD_CRR-2007.2.pdf
Some of it is written for tandem competitions so you can ignore the rules about cages etc.. unless you plan on running tandem. If you have any question please post them here, IM me or email me. If I don't have an answer for you I can always call USDrift for clarification. It's a lot better to have these issues resolved early...

for the battery being in the trunk can i buy a battery tie down bars and then cover it wiht the tub cover? and also for the brakes will it matter if i got 300ZX brakes but a S13 master cylinder?
Professir
08-04-2008, 10:56 PM
The master cylinder being from a 13 shouldn't matter. As for the battery, I can't answer that one.

There will be a Large skid pad for beginners, to practice J-Turns, Donuts, and figure eights and a high speed linkable course for intermediate and advanced drivers. This event is a great opportunity to get started if you are new. Not only do you have High Level instructors, such as Mike Bolanos and Tommy Suell, but Professional FD drivers will also be available to give you pointers and show you what its like to drift at HIGH SPEEDS!! For more information and Registration visit http://www.vegasdrift.com/smf

08-06-2008, 09:48 AM
pm nojutsu42 if you have any questions regarding tech inspections.
but for the battery thing, it has to be properly tied down, meaning no bungee cords or what not.
if you need to, go to autozone, they sell battery tiedown kits for a few dollars.
also, your positive lead must be covered, i've passed tech before by covering it with electrical tape, but that was a year ago so who knows? ;)

You do not have to be a member of N.A.S.A., banners will probably not be given out at this event, and VD just uses the NASA rule book as the norm for rules placed at the race track.

mr peas
08-07-2008, 07:07 PM
that you'll have to ask nojutsu, or nick.
but last time i checked, you sign papers once you're at the track that's when you receive your wristband.
spectators are allowed, i don't think they have to sign anything, but i forget, that's why you should ask nick. haha
nojutsu42
08-12-2008, 11:24 AM
Spectators are always welcome. They need to bring a good attitude and realize that they are on a military installation. if they have warrents they will most likely be detained at the gate. No Guns Drugs or Animals.
Spectators (family or friends) will also be required to submit their own information
First, Last name:
Phone Number:
Address:
Drivers License Number:
Email:
SSN:
All participants and spectators need to have valid photo ID and vehicle insurance and registration. (unless the drift car is not registered and on a trailer) Vehicles are subject to search at any time. Anyone with 1 ton trucks and/or enclosed trailers will need to access the base through Area 2 gate. This gate will only be open in the morning for entry (hours to be determined).

So how many sets of rear tires should us noobs expect to go through? I'd like to have enough to run all day.

So how many sets of rear tires should us noobs expect to go through? I'd like to have enough to run all day.
really depends on car setup and driving style. but if youre pretty new to drifting id be willing to bet you probably wont end up going through that many tires. so idk a safe number would probably be around 4.
2 tires to get used, 2 for backup and the tires you rolled up on. maybe even 6 clearly it depends on alot of things including tire condition . the surface is a bit coarse so it does eat through tires slightly faster than smoother surfaces. (i thought tire wear wasnt as bad as many people made it seem) but that really just means you will look even cooler because your car will smoke even more!
Sign up! get out there and have fun.
Professir
08-18-2008, 10:50 PM
I brought a total of 6 tires with me last year, and went through about 2 1/2 sets.
I'm just running a stock s14 with a welded diff. So I guess you could use that number as a safe estimate. It's really the surface that kills the tires so much.
ZenkiTrev
08-18-2008, 10:52 PM
OK so by 4 do you mean 4 rear tires or 4 pairs of rear tires?
This event will be the first time I've really ever gotten the rear end out. +1 to the extra tire smoke from the track surface.
Edit: Just saw your post Professir. 4 tires seems more logical based on your post. I'll bring 6 so I don't have to worry about running out.

So how many sets of rear tires should us noobs expect to go through? I'd like to have enough to run all day.
if you are very new, you will most likely hit up the skid pad a lot in which case one set on and one spare set is more than adequate. Do you have a diff? if no, you will burn up one tire a lot faster than the other, and then u can use the one ok one from each set and even have a third set, treads reversed. I did that once and it worked well, last years vegasdrift, my first event and I had no diff at the time.
wow i just realized a lot of people already answered...oh well...

kouki_monstor
08-19-2008, 11:18 PM
your vlsd should be more than adequate. it's alot better than running an open diff. if i were you, i'd bring as much as your budget would allow, not to mention the number of wheels you have to mount the tires on, as well as the number of wheels that would actually fit in your car. i always think it's safer to bring as many as you possibly can, rather than cheap out and run out in the middle of the event. better safe than sorry

i work at discount tire and have used tires that are in the sizes that everyone wants in my hands all day that get thrown away like theyre not good anymore. im gunna stock up than mout them on as many 17s that are 5 by 114.3 lug pattern wheels as i can find then rent them out to peeps. or just bring a fuckload of 80 percent or better tires then sell them to you lil chitlins for like 25 or 30 a piece. i need to know now what you need that way you can give me a tire request and im gunna snag them for you. im gunna need trucks, and people to bring all this rubber to the event. i will pay the drivers of the trucks to drive the tires. im also gunna sell hardstems and mount up for people if there are machines there. fyi. here are sum pics of the stuff. the last pic is a pic of my wheels with sum 90% potenzas i got for freaking free off a STI!
