View Full Version : Who Wants To Help Pull My Motor?

Well, long story short I'm almost 100% certain I spun a rod bearing.

I caught it early and may be able to get away with just replacing the bearings, but I've got to tear apart the bottom end and check clearances just to be sure. I figure I'd like to clean up everything anyhow, and since I may have to just replace the motor, I may as well just pull the engine out.

That said...anyone able to help? We have my garage to work in, and I have tools, food, etc. I'd just need an engine hoist (mando :)), and a few spare hands.

Moral of the story: if you've got an SR20 and are going to be pushing it hard, make SURE your oil pan is in excellent condition (meaning NEW), or just spend the $250 on the baffled GReddy pan.

Let me know if anyone can help, when it'll be convenient, etc.

Matt,

I will be glad to help. I am normally off wednsday and thursday. Not this week though. But I can come over on anyday if I am off early enough. How could you tell you spun the bearing?

It looks like we'll be doing this sometime next week (after I'm back from New York).

It's definitely a rod knock/spun bearing noise. The only other thing in the engine that will tick/knock like mine is would be a bearing or possibly a seized wrist pin.

Either way, the plan is to pull the engine ASAP and get it on an engine stand so I can start taking a look at the bottom end. If everything clearance wise is in spec, I'll just order up some new rod bearings for $50, put them in, and call it a day. If things are out of spec, that's when the fun begins. A new (used) long block will cost around $1000 or so, and I have a feeling I can do a cheap-o rebuild for about the same price, so I'll have some decisions to make.

Does anyone have the tools necessary (ring compressor, etc...) to rebuild an engine?

You can usually get a stripped engine and trans for about $1100-$1200. The only thing it tends not to come with is the electronics. You would have spare parts of just about everything. That is what I am thinking of doing...
Also look up www.sr20store.com Marco is very helpful in regards to used parts and engines. Very fast shipping also.

I shot an email to marco, as well as a few other shops.

I decided that if it's unfixable I won't rebuild just yet...no sense doing a ghetto-style rebuild :)
Besides, I can probably recoup at least $500 by selling random stuff that I don't need of the motor, so that'll lower the cost some.

Just let me know when everyone is free. Biggie is borrowing the engine hoist, so if Mando can't come, just let me know. I can always take the truck over to his place to grab the hoist if it's ok.

Matt,

I am off on monday and Thursday this week, or i can help any other day of the week if we do it after 7:30 pm thats when I get off at work. or if you want you can come pick up the engine hoist and do it yourself. Just let me know because one of my friends has it right now, he should be done using it on monday so any day after that would be fine.

Hey, sorry to hear about the engine.

Was it still a fun trip? Streets of Willow kicks ass, eh?

I have a ring compressor. Used it a couple times. Seems to work. Takes a bit though.

I'll help out whenever.

Well, I'll put it this way. I drove 4 hours in the heat without a/c, spent a 1/2 day at the track driving, destroyed an engine, had to wait and tow the car back to vegas, and overall, the trip was a complete fucking blast!!

Streets of willow kicked ass, big willow just looks downright scary, and their smaller course on the side of the mountain (horse thief mile??) looks scary as hell.

Aside from the speedventures event @ streets that I was at, there was a BIG NASA race at big willow (like, 400+ cars). Saw all sorts of cars running, LOTS of race prepped 5.0 mustangs, a big dealer sponsored porsche team (had a 993, a few 944's, a 914, and a 928s4), as well as a team out with two brand new viper comp coupes that were absolutely sick. The vipers were dominating their class...making passes on the OUTSIDE on turn 8 at big willow (which is a 150mph+ flat out banked 180 degree in a prepped race car).

My car will get fixed, as well as get a GReddy oil pan. I think all of us have realized that this is a sport that costs money...all it means is that my budget for the car gets reallocated. I can simply take the money that would have gone for the rest of the suspension and put it towards the motor. Shit happens...you take it as it comes, right? :)

It looks to me that we'll be doing this next week (sometime after the 18th), unless of course some people can give a hand this week before thursday, as I'm heading out of town to New York then.

EDIT: mando, I'll speak to you tomorrow at some point. Maybe I'll get the car in the garage tomorrow or tuesday during the day and start getting stuff ready, then Tuesday night we can just pull the sucker out that night when a few other people who want to come by can help (joel, james, whomever). If I do everything before hand it shouldn't take us too long to do the finishing work.

EDIT 2: well, now that I think about it, lets do it tuesday night. I'll start prepping the car that afternoon, then we can just do it all in a few hours. I'll provide pizza, etc :). Whomever wants to come by, just let me know and i'll give you my #, directions, etc. The more the merrier, plus we can all just hang out after.

Well, for all who want to help, let's say start working 630 or so on tuesday (tomorrow). Just show up whenever you can. I'll be speaking with you today armando and I can pick up the hoist if need be, but if you're able to just bring it with you tomorrow after work that would be good as well. I doubt we'll get to the pulling phase in just 2 hours, but you never know :)

My address is:

I think I'm fairly set on tools. If you've got some 3/8" drive swivels that may be helpful for getting the motor mounts loose, as well as a breaker bar.

Hookers and blow are always a plus.

I've also got food & drinks for all who come...went out earlier and got a bunch of burgers, so we can use the shiny grill in my backyard :)

You moved up to the northwest already, right?

If you felt like driving down here you can still stop by...i'm sure we'll still be working or at least hanging out.
